Video Description
Narcissistic abuse doesn't just damage your emotions — it rewires your nervous system, training your amygdala to detect threat everywhere and keeping your body locked in survival mode long after the relationship is over. Bottom-up healing means working with the body first — breath, grounding, movement, co-regulation, somatic awareness, reparenting, and trauma-informed support — because you cannot think your way out of a body-based survival response. Your nervous system learned danger through repetition; it learns safety the same way — small moments, repeated, until your body finally believes the war is over.
You might know they're gone. You might know the house is quiet and the phone is silent. But your body doesn't care what your logic knows — it remembers. That flinch when a door slams. The racing heart when someone's tone shifts. The full-body alarm that fires at "we need to talk." That's not weakness. That's a nervous system that adapted to survive an unsafe environment, and now it's still running the old survival program in a life where you're trying to be safe.
THE 7 STEPS — REWIRING YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM
Create Foundational Safety — You cannot heal in the same environment still injuring you. No contact, or structured grey rock low contact where that's not possible. Your body needs evidence you are protecting it.
Regulate With Breath and Grounding — A longer exhale signals the nervous system the danger has passed. Grounding techniques pull your brain back to the present room, not the past one.
Release Stored Survival Energy Through Movement — Trauma is stored as tension in the body. Walking, shaking, gentle stretching helps discharge what your body never got to complete.
Co-Regulation With Safe People — Your nervous system settles through contact with calm, regulated people. Safe connection is part of the biology of healing, not a luxury.
Develop Somatic Awareness — Abuse trains you to override your gut and explain away discomfort. Body scanning rebuilds that internal signal so you stop doubting what you're already sensing.
Reparent Your Inner World — Their criticism becomes your inner monologue. Reparenting means changing how you speak to yourself — grounded adult protection, not fake affirmations.
Get Trauma-Informed Support — Look for support that understands the body, not just the story. EMDR, somatic experiencing, and trauma-informed therapy can help process what talk alone can't reach.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Q: Why am I still hypervigilant even though they're gone?
Your nervous system was trained inside an unpredictable environment. The amygdala learned to scan constantly — a tone, a look, a delay in reply. It doesn't stop because the relationship ended. It stops when it has enough repeated evidence of safety.
Q: What is bottom-up healing?
Top-down healing works from the mind — understanding, insight, reframing. Bottom-up works from the body — breath, movement, somatic awareness, co-regulation. After trauma, the survival system overrides logic, so body-based work comes first.
Q: What does cortisol do to your body after long-term emotional abuse?
Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated for months or years. Sleep goes wrong. Energy crashes. Muscles tighten. Your brain gets foggy. That tired-but-wired feeling — exhausted but unable to relax — is your system running too long in threat mode.
